Problem: food insecurity and hunger
Food insecurity affects 1 in 6 people and nearly 1 in 4 children
According to a 2015 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 42.2 million people live in food insecure households with 10.9 million of these households having "very low food security."
What this means is that one or more people in the household were hungry over the course of the year because of the inability to afford enough food. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people impacted by food insecurity has increased exponentially.
This problem is not unique to any one region, state, city or town.
1 in 6 Americans don't have access to enough food as hunger has NO boundaries. Many people believe the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, but the reality is much different.
Hunger affects all social economic status.
Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days. The recent layoffs and job losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic have compounded the issues, resulting in a marked increase in the number of people needing help.
For children, the lack of nutrition is particularly impactful, affecting cognitive and behavioral development as well as physical growth.
